'Shove It' was released in 1988 as the debut album of The Cross, a UK rock band created by Queen's drummer Roger Taylor, featuring him as the rhythm guitarist and lead vocalist.

Taylor formed The Cross after Queen's Magic Tour, around mid-1987 and he recruited Queen's tour keyboardist, Spike Edney, but advertised for the remaining musicians; they were, when the band was formed, guitarist Clayton Moss, bassist Peter Noone, and drummer Josh Macrae

Taylor had originally started recording the 'Shove It' album to release it as a solo artist. However, he decided to recruit a band and called them The Cross. Most of the album had been completed before recruiting the band members, with Taylor playing much of the instrumentation.
