“Radio Ga Ga” is a Queen single that was written by Roger Taylor, recorded in 1984 and was the first single to be released from Queen's eleventh studio album “The Works”. It was also featured on Queen's second “Greatest Hits” compilation album.
The song is a fan favourite and featured in all of Queen's concerts since 1984, including their iconic performance at Live Aid in 1985.
The original inspiration for the song came from Taylor's song Felix, where Taylor and his French partner Dominique Beyrand were at home listening to the radio. Felix wandered in and promptly declared what he was hearing as “radio ca ca”, which is the French phrase for “shit.”
Taylor used this inspiration to compose a song as a means of a nostalgic defence of radio; this at a time when television was overtaking radio's popularity and how one would listen to radio in the past for a favourite comedy, drama, or science fiction programme. It also addressed music video and the beginning of MTV that was competing with radio as an important medium for record promotion.
The music video was filmed at Carlton TV Studios and Shepperton Studios, London, between 23 & 24th November 1983 and January 1984.
