"Hammer To Fall" is a Queen single from their studio album "The Works", written by Brian May and released in the UK in 1984; the single version was edited and cut down by thirty seconds from the album version.
The single version featured on Queen's second Greatest Hits compilation album, whilst the album version featured on the Queen Rocks compilation album.
"Hammer To Fall" featured as the third song during Queen's appearance at the 1985 Live Aid concert and in the setlist for both Queen's The Works Tour and The Magic Tour.
The music video contains footage of a performance during The Works Tour in Brussels.
During the live versions of the song, Spike Edney appeared onstage playing rhythm guitar; this was a change for Edney, as he was usually unseen, hidden behind his keyboard stack.
The song has often been interpreted to be about nuclear war, as several of the lyrics refer to The Cold War, however, Brian May describes it to be about life and death and being aware that death is a part of life; the hammer coming down is just a symbol of the Grim Reaper.
